Garage Ceiling Height Requirements

High Hopes: Does Your Ceiling Measure Up?

The biggest mistake DIYers make is forgetting the "Car + Lift" math. You don't want to realize your SUV is hitting the rafters halfway up.

  • The Golden Rule: $Total\ Height = Vehicle\ Height + Lift\ Rise + 6\ inches\ (Safety\ Margin)$.

  • Check for Obstructions: Look up! Garage door openers, light fixtures, and structural beams are often in the "danger zone."

  • Standard Heights: Most full-size 2-post lifts require at least 12 feet of clearance, while some low-ceiling models can work in as little as 9 feet.
